This is a very difficult task especially for Grandparents that are taking on the parenting role for the second time themselves and they need to have special support and guidance with regular respite, counselling and emotional support.
Extended family including grandparents may need to take on the responsibility of caring for children in their families due to a number of reasons. Examples of these reasons are: Death of a parent, drug/alcohol abuse, domestic violence, relationship break downs, mental health issues, homelessness or due to child protection orders.Without grandparents and kinship carers taking on the parental role for these children they would be placed into foster care or a non government organisation under child protection orders with court orders placing them in the care of the state government.
Examples of Support:
Counselling, Respite, Emergency Care, Camps, Day Trips, Youth Support, Sports, Referrals for Legal Advice and Court Support.
