Chickens are helping families in South Africa generate much-needed income. Oxfam Australia works to increase access to food in South Africa by providing families with chickens, as well as the initial training and support to raise and breed them. Households can then eat the eggs and sell the baby chickens and eggs at the market to earn money.
“I started the project in 2012 and now ... the number of my chickens has multiplied. People come to buy my chickens. They pay and I am able to buy things for our household. My husband and mother-in-law do not have work so these chickens help us a lot.” — Nomathemba Ngcubo, chicken farmer, Ixopo, South Africa
