Our Inflammation Research Group has shown that some immune cells which act as the garbage disposal cells of the body, can play an important role in the fatty plaque formation in arteries which can lead to hearrt disease and stroke. When these cells die,they expel their cellular components to form a sticky net structure to trap and kill bacteria. The group are looking into different ways to stop this process, paving the way for future therapies to slow fatty plaque formation and prevent heart disease and stroke.
