Silk is finding new applications on the frontiers of medical science. Purified silk is extremely well tolerated by the body and is widely used by doctors and surgeons to hold tissues together. Collaboratively with the University of New South Wales, our Applied Material Research Group has discovered that silk can be blended with other natural fibres to create exciting new materials with the strength and elasticity to form effective blood vessel replacement in future.
