Ngroo Education Incorporated

Over the past two years Ngroo Education Incorporated has trained 700 non Aboriginal staff in 100 services enrolling 600 Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander children. Our work is underpinned by the local Elders, who are the knowledge holders.

After we train non Aboriginal staff in how to provide cultural safety and remove barriers in their services, the local Aboriginal Elders connect families in their community to the service. This is true to the original model set up in 2009 in Western Sydney, where, after four years, 45 families are still enrolled.

Through our work, we have been able to create social change through inclusive practices enacting Sorry.

Under the United Nations Declaration of Rights for Indigenous Peoples, it states that all children have the right to access education. This program enables communities to achieve self determination through education. With our own practices we maintain more than 50 per cent of our Board and staff positions being for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Another unexpected outcome of our work is the recognition of the importance of Reconciliation by the non Aboriginal teachers who have completed the program - in both private and professional settings.
