Atherosclerosis can develop silently for many years without symptoms. It can strike unexpectedly regardless of age, gender, race or social standing. Often, heart attacks and strokes develop when a blood clot lodges in a vessel that is already partially blocked by atherosclerosis.
Understanding and overcoming atherosclerosis is one of the most important medical challenges in Australia and worldwide.
