An Assistance Dog takes 2 years to train to be able to help a person with severe physical disabilities. Each dog learns over 50 commands that will help a person with their everyday needs, from opening and shutting doors, pressing the button at road crossings to 'talking' to alert others, when their owner is in trouble. An Assistance Dogs makes a huge difference to their owners life, not just in their abilities to undertake tasks but the dog provides increased Independence and freedom, builds confidence and self esteem in the person as they are able to get on their life without being reliant on others, and very often reduces the need for a carer.
