The Taronga Foundation
The Taronga Foundation's vision is to inspire our community to create a better future for wildlife and our children.
Taronga Zoo has been a respected name in the care and conservation of animals for almost 100 years and Western Plains Zoo for 30. With up to 100 species of animals, plants and insects becoming extinct each day, and more than 12,000 threatened with extinction, our zoos are providing an important genetic safety-net for endangered wildlife. In an increasingly urbanised world, zoos are playing an ever-more important role in strengthening connections between the community and our natural environment.
A third of the species cared for at Taronga and almost half of the 130 species at Western Plains are threatened with extinction. Which is why – from breeding programs to partnerships with research centres and wildlife agencies around the world – our zoos are proudly leading a range of global conservation initiatives and providing inspirational experiences for our visitors.
