We rescue surplus food, that would otherwise have ended up in landfill, from wholesalers, catering companies and food outlets. Last year 850 volunteers made 180,000 quiches, pasties and other nutritious meals in our kitchen, and distributed another 200 tonnes of food to 50 charities across Melbourne, including soup vans and homeless shelters.
Each meal costs us 40 cents to prepare, which allows us to give all of our food to charities for free. So every $100 donated makes 250 meals.We have just moved into a larger kitchen in Abbotsford and aim to give away one million meals each year. However, this significant growth means we need to raise more funds each year to run our kitchen, collect donated food and deliver meals to charities.
